Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For New Haven County, With Damaging Winds, Tornadoes Possible

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for most of the region as a potent system develops that will bring drenching downpours, and damaging wind gusts between 60 and 70 miles per hour with 1-inch hail and an isolated tornado.

The watch was issued just before 3 p.m. Saturday, July 29, and is in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday.

In New York, the watch covers the following counties:

All of New York City
Nassau
Suffolk
Westchester
Putnam
Rockland
Orange
Dutchess
Ulster
Sullivan
Columbia
Greene
Albany
Rensselaer
Schenectady
Schoharie
Broome
Chenango
Delaware
Montgomery
Otsego

In Connecticut, the watch covers all eight of the state's counties:

Fairfield
Hartford
Litchfield
Middlesex
New Haven
New London
Tolland
Windham

The watch covers the following counties in Massachusetts:

Barnstable
Berkshire
Bristol
Dukes
Essex
Franklin
Hampden
Hampshire
Middlesex
Nantucket
Norfolk
Plymouth
Suffolk
Worcester

The storm system could bring as much as half of an inch of rainfall with locally higher amounts possible.

After the storms push through, the heat wave will end.

Sunday, July 30 will be pleasant and comfortable with mostly sunny skies and a high temperature generally ranging from the upper 70s to the low 80s.

Look for more of the same on Monday, July 31 through Thursday, Aug. 3 with mostly sunny skies and a high temperature right around 80 degrees each day.
